Alabama NFL roundup: Derrick Henry joins Hall of Fame running backs

Derrick Henry ran for two third-quarter touchdowns as the Baltimore Ravens won their fifth consecutive game by beating the New York Jets 23-10 on Sunday.

The Ravens have recovered from a 1-5 start to catch the Pittsburgh Steelers at the top of the AFC North standings at 6-5 with six games left to play.

Henry ran for 64 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries and caught two passes for 24 yards against the Jets.

Henry scored on a pair of 2-yard runs. The first came as Baltimore took a 10-7 lead with 8:49 left in the third quarter, and the second put the Ravens in front 17-7 with 3:33 remaining in the third quarter. On the latter TD, Henry converted on a fourth-and-goal snap.

The game was the 30th in Henry’s career with at least two touchdown runs. He joined Pro Football Hall of Fame running backs LaDainian Tomlinson and Emmitt Smith as the only players in NFL history with at least 30 games with multiple rushing touchdowns. Tomlinson had 38 games with at least two rushing touchdowns, and Smith had 36.

Henry ranks fifth in NFL history with 115 rushing touchdowns.

By pushing his career rushing yardage to 12,294 on Sunday, Henry passed Marcus Allen, Edgerrin James and Marshall Faulk to reach 12th in NFL history. Next up is Jim Brown with 12,312 rushing yards.

“You start running out of game balls,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. “How many game balls can you give him? Maybe we’ll wait until he cracks the top 10, I don’t know. But he’s going to get more yards.”

Henry was among the 38 former Alabama players who got on the field on the 12th Sunday of the NFL’s 106th season.

Four other former Alabama players were involved in the New York-Baltimore game:

Marlon Humphrey (Hoover) started at cornerback for the Ravens. Humphrey made four tackles, recorded one tackle for loss and forced one fumble. With Baltimore leading 20-10, Humphrey caused running back Breece Hall to fumble, and the Ravens recovered at their 3-yard line with 6:51 to play.

Metchie scored the game’s first points on a 13-yard reception from quarterback Tyrod Taylor with 4:04 left in the first half. In his first 40 NFL games – 33 with the Houston Texans and seven with the Philadelphia Eagles – Metchie scored one touchdown.
