Former Eagles head coach fired by future opponent

A former Philadelphia Eagles head coach has been fired.

Chip Kelly was dismissed as the offensive coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday night, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Kelly was in the midst of his first season with Pete Carroll and the Raiders, who dropped to 2-9 after a lackluster 24-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns in Week 12.

First-round rookie running back Ashton Jeanty managed only 50 rushing yards on 17 carries in Kelly’s final game. Geno Smith attempted 44 passes and was sacked 10 (yes, 10) times.

Kelly joined Las Vegas after a successful stint as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator. He helped the Buckeyes win the national championship last season.

Kelly coached with the Eagles from 2013-15, accumulating a 26-21 record with one postseason appearance as Andy Reid’s replacement before being fired.

Kelly, who made his name at Oregon from 2007-12, was hired as the San Francisco 49ers’ coach after being dismissed by the Eagles. He went 2-14 in 2016 and was fired.

Kelly then joined UCLA as its head coach from 2018-23. He went 35-34 with the Bruins before leaving for a one-year stint with the Buckeyes.

Kelly was scheduled to return to Lincoln Financial Field with the Raiders. The Eagles host Las Vegas on Dec. 14. Now, that won’t be happening.
