Eberechi Eze joined Arsenal despite talks with rivals Tottenham in the summer transfer window.
Look anywhere in the Premier League right now, and there is one player on everyone’s lips...Eberechi Eze. He scored a hat-tick in the North London derby, just months after snubbing a move to Tottenham, and moving to Arsenal last minute, because he is an Arsenal fan.
It must have been a real kick in the teeth for Thomas Frank during the 4-1 Arsenal win, as if to say: ‘This is what you could have had!’. The Arsenal star has impressed since joining from Crystal Palace in the summer, scoring five goals and providing three assists for the Gunners in 17 matches.
The fact that he is an Arsenal fan too makes the fans love him that bit more, and makes what happened in the summer all the more dramatic. It seems, however, based on recent reports, that Arsenal could pull the same trick over Spurs again in January.
Gunners could pull Eze trick with Antoine Semenyo
Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo has attracted a lot of transfer interest after it was revealed this month that he will have a £65m release clause in his contract in January, a relatively cheap price for someone of his quality. Semenyo has scored six goals and provided three assists in 11 Premier League matches for the Cherries so far this season.
The 25-year-old told The Athletic in 2024: “I am an Arsenal fan, I don't conflict the two with my job. It is great to play against Arsenal, a team I have watched all my life, and I want to play for the top clubs as well. In order for that to happen, I need to prove it."
He hinted at the possibility of moving to a top team such as the Gunners, too. “Any team that plays Champions League, Europa (League) - that's the aim.” He added, “I know that's not going to come with a click of my fingers, it's going to take some time.”
Arsenal could sign Semenyo if they sell Martinelli
Martinelli has struggled to find consistent form this season, but still remains a very talented player. He has an estimated market value of around £40m, so Arsenal could sell him and then put the profits towards a deal for the Bournemouth winger.
If the Gunners could pull it off, it would be an extra kick in the teeth, not only to rivals Spurs, but also Liverpool, who are considering Semenyo as their long-term replacement for Mo Salah.
