Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has issued an apology for his behaviour in the aftermath of Newcastle's 2-1 win over his side at St James' Park on Saturday.

A brace from Harvey Barnes inspired the Magpies to a vital victory in the Premier League in a game that was an excellent advert for the English top flight.

But tensions spilled over at full-time with both teams clashing. Gianluigi Donnarumma and Joelinton had a heated exchange and so, too, did Guardiola and Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes.

After a Sky Sports camera operator filmed the altercation between Guardiola and Guimaraes, the City boss chased after him before grabbing his headset and confronting him.

A colleague of the camera operator shoved Guardiola away before he marched down the tunnel looking furious.

But, with City in Champions League action on Tuesday evening, Guardiola took the opportunity to apologise for the incident in his press conference on Monday afternoon.

"I apologise. I feel embarrassed and ashamed when I see it," Guardiola said during his pre-match press conference ahead of Man City's Champions League clash against Bayer Leverkusen.

"I don’t like it. I apologise to the cameraman after one second. I am who I am. Even with 1,000 games I am not a perfect person and I make huge mistakes. It's not about what I regret but what is for sure I defend my team and my club.

"The reason why is I want to defend my team and my club. That is in no doubt."
