Swansea City today officially confirmed the appointment of Vitor Matos as their new head coach on a four-year deal.

The 37-year-old Portuguese tactician arrives from Maritimo having spent five years at Anfield as elite development coach under Jurgen Klopp.

He departed Anfield alongside Klopp and later joined Pep Lijnders at Red Bull Salzburg before taking the helm at Maritimo in June.

Speaking after the announcement, Matos said:

“Swansea, for me, have always had a style. Something that distinguished the club from all the others,” he said.

“Somehow we have got a bit far away from what is the DNA of the club.”

“So it will take steps, it will take a bit of time, but I really believe we can take steps in the right direction.”

“For that, we will need everyone, the whole club, all the fans and us all to have the same vision.”

“That’s what I want. I see the fans are still behind and pushing the team, we will need them and I see players who want to change the momentum and we need to find the right idea and the right vision to do it.”

“That’s the most important thing. It is clear we need to win games and points, but we need to focus on the process and I really believe if we can play to our best then the more chances we will have to win. That’s the direction we need to have.”

However, in Swansea’s official confirmation, the Welsh outfit has revealed that ex-Liverpool man Joe Allen will “also assist with the transition.”

Allen retired from professional football in May 2025 at age 35.

The Welsh midfielder enjoyed a four-year spell at Liverpool between 2012 and 2016, making 132 appearances for the Reds after following manager Brendan Rodgers from Swansea to Anfield in a £15 million transfer.

Swansea are working with Matos to finalize a backroom team that can provide the necessary support and expertise for success.

Club legend Leon Britton has also joined the coaching staff on a temporary basis.

The new boss takes charge of a side sitting 20th in the Championship following a difficult start under previous manager Alan Sheehan, with his first match coming against Derby County on Tuesday.
