As we come to the close of Premier League matchweek 12, it’s fair to say that the table isn’t looking the way that many people would have predicted. Arsenal are sitting six points clear of second place, a Cole Palmer-less Chelsea are leading the lethargic chasing pack, and Liverpool are sliding down the standings at an alarming rate.

After breaking the British transfer record not once but twice this summer, it’s safe to say Fenway Sports Group aren’t getting the return on investment they had hoped for on their bumper window. However, things could be about to go from bad to worse for the Reds.

Everton face the trip up the M62 this evening to face a rejuvenated Manchester United side in the last knockings of the weekend's action.

Old Trafford has by no means been a happy hunting ground for the Toffees in recent times.

In the past 32 league visits, the Blues have only come away with all three points on one occasion thanks to a famous late strike by Bryan Oviedo in December 2013.

But if David Moyes was able to overcome his old club and his Everton team return home with all three points, they would level Liverpool’s points tally for the season, going above them on goal difference.

It’s been a decade since Evertonians have found themselves having to scroll down to see their neighbours on the Premier League table after 12 games, showing the magnitude of this current Liverpool freefall.

After yet another defeat for the Reds this weekend, this time at home to Sean Dyche’s Nottingham Forest, who sat 19th prior to kick-off, they remain on 18 points.

This disappointing tally leaves Liverpool 11 points off title front-runners Arsenal and only seven points above the relegation zone.

If all goes well for the Blues this evening, Liverpool will end the night in their lowest league position since their dismal start to the 2015/2016 season that saw them sitting in 13th place after claiming just eight points from six games.

That led to the replacement of manager Brendan Rodgers with Jurgen Kloppfollowing a disappointing draw in the Merseyside derby a week later.

While there is currently no question over Arne Slot, their current standing represents how far his defending champions have fallen in such a short space of time.

And Everton could pile on the woe this evening.
