OPINION: Chelsea Should Sign Bargain Liverpool Target Rather Than Nottingham Forest Star To Boost Maresca’s Defence

Chelsea should go after a Liverpool transfer target in the January transfer window rather than Nottingham Forest defender Murillo.

The Blues find themselves suddenly as slight outsiders for the Premier League title race, as they are boosted up to second in the Premier League table. Enzo Maresca will be delighted with his side’s recent form after they beat Burnley 2-0 over the weekend to move within six points of Arsenal.

Chelsea will now turn their attention to the Champions League, as they face Barcelona on Tuesday night at Stamford Bridge, before welcoming Arsenal to the Bridge on Sunday afternoon next weekend.

The Blues have a fairly well-balanced squad, but most fans would agree that they could do with adding more quality at the centre-back position. Levi Colwill is out injured for the season, and Maresca has struggled to find consistent form from the likes of Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah and Josh Acheampong.

According to Caught Offside, Chelsea are keen to sign Nottingham Forest defender Murillo, who they were linked to in the summer. However, Forest reportedly value him at over £70m, which makes a January deal unlikely.

Amid their reported interest in Murillo, Chelsea could consider looking at one, a cheaper alternative, but also someone who is familiar with Stamford Bridge and the Premier League.

Marc Guehi‘s deal at Crystal Palace is due to expire at the end of the season, and so he will either leave in the summer, or a team will snap him up in January. Liverpool nearly signed him in the summer, but their deal failed.

He is expected to cost around £35m, in January, so half the cost of Murillo, yet he’s a more established, and experienced Premier League defender. Chelsea could go after Guehi and sign him for what has to be considered a bargain for a player of his quality.

Furthermore, if Chelsea were to bring the youth academy product back to Stamford Bridge, then they would prevent rivals Liverpool, Tottenham and Newcastle signing him, which is also a boost for Maresca.
