Top five Chelsea vs Barcelona moments
Ronaldinho sprinkles magic on Stamford Bridge
A memorable evening at Stamford Bridge saw Chelsea overturn a first leg deficit in 2005 to reach the quarter-finals after an electric start.
Eidur Gudjohnsen, Frank Lampard and Damien Duff scored in the opening 19 minutes, however they relied on a late John Terry header to send them through.
This is due to the brilliance of Ronaldinho, whose memorable toe poke goal bamboozled Petr Cech and showed exactly why he would go on to pip Lampard to the Ballon d’Or award.
What the big names have said in the past about Chelsea vs Barcelona
“There are players here who hate Chelsea more than Real Madrid. I never thought I would hear myself say that. I also never thought I would see something worse than the Boca and River Plate rivalry or Brazil v Argentina – but this is. We would rather play Arsenal, Manchester United or anyone else than be on the pitch with Chelsea.”
Lionel Messi
“I thought this could be the worst night of my footballing life, I was thinking towards double figures, I spent the first 20 minutes getting nowhere near Xavi and Iniesta”
Frank Lampard
“I always say this Barcelona team was the best of my generation, one team was capable of matching them in this era and that was us.”
John Terry
2009 semi-final heartbreak
180 minutes couldn’t separate Chelsea and Barcelona in 2009, however the away goals rule came back to bite the Blues late on at Stamford Bridge.
Andres Iniesta’s long range strike saw the Catalan side go through, not before the referee was at the centre of attention for all the wrong reasons.
Chelsea were denied a number of penalties, and Didier Drogba’s foul-mouthed rant at full-time summed up how every fan was feeling as the Blues were denied a place in a second consecutive Champions League final.

Frank Lampard scores from impossible angle
The Blues drew Barcelona in the 2006/07 group stages, and won at home to go with a 2-2 draw at the Nou Camp.
Lampard was brought off the bench in the second half away from home, and found the net in his 23 minutes on the pitch.
The Englishman got on the end of a cross and just about kept the ball in play, before pulling out an outrageous finish from the touchline to help the Blues towards a vital point.
Willian finally gets it right
Chelsea produced a near perfect performance against Barcelona in 2018, with Antonio Conte selecting a side without a recognised striker for the first leg of the Round of 16 tie.
Willian had struck the post twice from range already, before he finally got it right and found the net to spark joy amongst Chelsea fans in attendance.
Lionel Messi would break hearts with his first goal against the Blues, and they would go on to advance with a dominant 3-0 win at the Nou Camp in the return fixture.
Fernando Torres sends Chelsea to the Champions League final
Easily the biggest moment in Fernando Torres’ Chelsea career, the Spaniard had been really struggling to hit the ground running at his new club.
He started on the bench as the Blues soaked up the pressure while facing one of the best sides that has ever been created, when the ball was cleared long and left him one on one with Victor Valdes.
The striker kept his composure to find the net, sending Chelsea to their second Champions League final, and on their way to their first ever victory.
