Move over DK Metcalf, the Seattle Seahawks have a new single-season receiving king.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba etched his name in the Seahawks’ record books on Sunday with yet another stellar performance, hauling in eight receptions for a career-high 167 yards and two touchdowns to surpass Metcalf for the franchise’s single-season receiving record.

Smith-Njigba brought his total to 1,313 receiving yards on the season, moving 10 yards in front of Metcalf’s previous franchise high.
And Seattle’s third-year wideout still has six more games to build on that total and potentially break Calvin Johnson’s NFL single-season receiving record of 1,964 yards set in 2012.
Smith-Njigba now has at least 75 receiving yards in a league-record 11 straight games to start the season, and his eight games with at least 100 yards are already a Seahawks single-season franchise record.

Smith-Njigba, head coach Mike Macdonald and other Seahawks – including Cooper Kupp, whose 2021 season is second on the NFL all-time receiving yards list – reacted to the star receiver setting a new franchise record after Sunday’s win. Here’s a look at what they said.
• Mike Macdonald
“Happy for JSN. He’s doing an incredible job, brings it everyday, and he’s a great teammate, which is awesome. So you’re really happy for him.”
Macdonald later added: “He’s got a tremendous ability and he’s a great talent, and he’s an incredible worker. I would say it’s a team thing. He’s not the only guy running routes out there. He’s not the guy protecting. I think our offensive staff does a great job of moving him around, which it’s not easy to play multiple positions and move around. It’s hard for guys to do that. So it takes a lot of effort, it takes a lot of, like, elegant simplicity to kind of make him get in all these different spots.”
• WR Cooper Kupp
“At the end of the day, he’s done an incredible job making the most of opportunities over and over again. There’s been games where it’s like, man, we’re not throwing the ball a ton, but every opportunity he has to make a play he’s doing it. That’s hard to do in this league. Everyone knows that the passing game, a lot of it going to be going through him, and he just continues to make plays. It’s pretty impressive to watch.”
• QB Sam Darnold
“It’s unbelievable, man, just the way that he’s been able to play this year every single game. It’s tough to be that consistent, but I think that it starts with his attitude and his prep throughout the week. So no surprise whatsoever. He’s a really good player.”
Darnold also said: “His body control is second to none. … If the ball is overthrown, I feel he has the talent and the speed to speed up and catch it. Or if it’s underthrown, he has the ability to put the defender in a tough position and kind of box him out and get the ball, and not only catch the ball but also try to score with it.”
• CB Devon Witherspoon
“I always knew he was going to be capable of doing stuff like this. It’s just hard to guard him, bro. Man, he can get open. He’s just so efficient in what he do, and then he’s got like a great catch radius. I’m just a fan watching just like y’all when he be out there. I’m so happy and stuff like that because I remember when a lot of people where saying stuff our rookie year like he ain’t putting up the numbers stuff. And I’m like, bro, trust me, you don’t know what we got over there. Now he’s just able to shine the light on it. He’s just doing his thing out there right now.”
• Jaxon Smith-Njigba
“Honestly, I look at it as a team award because without Sam, without the protection, without (wide receiver Rashid Shaheed) and Coop, this doesn’t happen. So I’m grateful and thankful, blessed for my team, blessed to be a Seahawk.”
