The Premier League has officially confirmed the dates for the new 2026/27 season in what has been a busy administrative period for the division.

The Premier League has already revealed that new financial rules are in place for Liverpool and the rest of the 19 sides in the league, including new Squad Cost Rule and Sustainability and Systemic Resilience mandates.

Now the division has today announced the start and finish dates for the 2026-27 campaign, marking the latest-ever beginning to a top-flight season in English football history.

The opening round of fixtures will kick off on Saturday, August 22, 2026 – one week later than traditional August starts – with the final match round scheduled for Sunday, May 30, 2027, when all games will commence simultaneously as is customary.

It means close of the Premier League falls only one week before the UEFA Champions League final, which takes place on Saturday, June 5, 2027, at Madrid’s Estadio Metropolitano, the venue where Liverpool claimed their sixth European Cup.

The delayed commencement allows for an 89-day gap from the end of the current 2025-26 season and, crucially, a 33-day break following the FIFA World Cup 2026 final on July 19

The 2026-27 season will consist of 33 weekends and five midweek match rounds, mirroring the structure of the current campaign.

To help reduce fixture contestation, the Premier League has guaranteed that no two match rounds will take place within 60 hours of each other during the Christmas and New Year period—addressing long-standing concerns about player welfare over the festive schedule.

Additionally, the international calendar has undergone modifications, with the September international break extending to three weeks to accommodate four matches, while the October international break will be eliminated entirely.

The newly enlarged Club World Cup, expanded European Championship, Nations League, and record-breaking 48-team World Cup have all contributed to an unprecedented workload for top-tier footballers.
