Chelsea star Marc Cucurella quipped that Cole Palmer suffered a broken toe because he lost a game of FIFA when he was asked about his injured team-mate.

The Blues playmaker was edging close to a return from a groin injury that has kept him out of action since September. But just as Palmer was closing in on a return to action for Chelsea, he suffered a freak accident at home and broke his toe. And Cucurella has suggested that the England star may have hurt himself after losing a game online.

Giving his verdict on Palmer’s setback in a press conference ahead of Tuesday’s clash with Barcelona, Cucurella said: "To be fair, I don't believe it.

“It is true that these things can sometimes happen. I have had this a couple of times but I'm stronger than them, so I don't feel anything.

“It's a big upset for us because he's near to playing with us, to train with us, and then now he needs to rest. But this is part of life, a part of footballers' lives, we have personal lives, and we have these kinds of problems, so hopefully he can recover fast."

Asked how the injury occurred, the Spanish defender joked: "I don't know. He's running because I think he lost a FIFA game or something like this, I think!"

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has revealed that Palmer’s injury will keep him out of at least the next three games and was coy on the issue on the eve of Tuesday night's mouthwatering Champions League clash with Barcelona.

“We don’t know when, but for sure [he will be back] soon. He’s already on the pitch and touching the ball. The feeling is good,” Maresca said.

“We are focused on tomorrow’s game. The last time I spoke with Cole was yesterday after the session to ask how he was feeling. He was feeling good.”
