Liverpool could now potentially lose Giovanni van Bronckhorst to another job, in another setback for the under-fire Arne Slot.
Slot is going through easily the toughest spell of his managerial career to date, with the Reds losing eight of their last 11 matches in all competitions.
There are some who believe the Dutchman should be sacked as Liverpool’s head coach after such a bad run of form, with Gary Neville assessing the situation, saying:
“I thought Liverpool would experience what they are experiencing this season last year, after Klopp left. What Slot did was out of the ordinary. Liverpool expect to win titles, they don’t expect to lose six of seven in any season. He’s causing himself a problem.
“Slot is a brilliant manager with real class, but he’s got to reverse and do something different – maybe make some difficult decisions. He’s going to come under pressure, let’s not get too carried away with that. The players have to step up, or it will become a problem.”
Now, according to Football Insider, Liverpool assistant coach Van Bronckhorst is “under consideration” to become the new boss of Indonesia’s national team.
They are “in the process of finding a new head coach following the dismissal of Patrick Kluivert last month in the wake of the country’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup”, and Slot’s colleague is seen as an option.
Another possible blow that Slot could do without
Slot is feeling the heat and battling to save his job at Liverpool, and frankly, the last thing he needs is to lose a key member of his coaching staff at a key point in the season.
Hopefully, Van Bronckhorst wants to stay at Anfield and help play a part in turning things around after a shocking start to the 2025/26 campaign, but that remains to be seen.
The lure of potentially managing at the World Cup next summer is clear, though, and he may also like the idea of being in charge of a side, rather than in an assistant role, having won the Eredivisie title as Feyenoord boss back in 2016/17.
For now, Slot needs to keep as many allies close to him as possible at Liverpool, with Van Bronckhorst very much falling into that bracket.
