Real Madrid currently sit atop La Liga table, having collected 32 points from their opening 13 matches so far this season.
However, Los Blancos have recently hit a rough patch, with consecutive draws against Rayo Vallecano and Elche, and a 1-0 defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League on November 4.
Despite these setbacks, Alonso’s side remain in strong contention to reclaim the Spanish top-flight title after losing out to rivals Barcelona last season.
Still, Xabi Alonso’s position at the Bernabeu appears under threat following this tricky run of results.
Real Madrid needed an 87th-minute equaliser from Jude Bellingham to secure a point against Elche on Sunday.
“It’s soccer. After a good run, we’ve had results that aren’t what we wanted,” Alonso said after the game.
“The team hasn’t collapsed.
“It’s still competing. The results and the play can be improved. We’re self-critical, but the spirit remains good.
“We must persevere in the face of adversity. This is Real Madrid, and we know we have to live with criticism.”
Adding to the pressure, it emerged on Monday that Vinicius Junior has informed the club that he does not wish to renew his contract, amid reports of a strained relationship with Alonso.
The Brazilian reportedly has concerns regarding Alonso, who was appointed as Carlo Ancelotti’s successor in May.
Real Madrid are pleased with the important changes Alonso has implemented and the fact that they are leading La Liga.
However, there are growing concerns about discontent among a significant portion of the squad, with Vinicius Jr. serving as the most prominent example.
According to Jorge C. Picón of Spanish outlet AS, Alonso’s situation at Real Madrid is starting to become unsustainable.
Several players want a change, and important voices within the club’s offices are beginning to see it as necessary.
