Premier League star Idrissa Gana Gueye'snaps'and slaps own team-mate during Man Utd clash

Idrissa Gana Gueye has been sent off for slapping a team-mate during Everton's clash with Manchester United.

Just over ten minutes into the clash, after a Manchester United attack that had seen Bruno Fernandes go close, Gueye and Michael Keane squared off following a disagreement.

Keane and Gueye locked horns as the Senegalese midfielder was then seen raising his hand to his team-mate and striking him across the face. "He has snapped," Gary Neville said on Sky Sports commentary.

"He has slapped his own team-mate! There is not much in it..." Jordan Pickford had play peacemaker as he dragged Gueye away from his other team-mate.

After seeing a replay of the incident, Neville adds: "How much venom was in that slap? He has been sent off for that. Was it a little slap or a proper whack?

"There is no doubt a hand comes out to the face but it didn't look too much. They might have had to send him off purely because there is a strike to the face.

"They were not fighting, it wasn't a scrap. It could have been dealt with by a yellow. I don't think it needed to be a red."

A post on the Premier League Match Centre's X account read: "The referee’s call of red card to Gueye for violent conduct was checked and confirmed by VAR – with the action deemed to be a clear strike to the face of Keane."

According to the Premier League's rules, the law for violent conduct defines a sending off offence as - Striking an opponent or any other person, on the head or face with their hand or arm, unless the force used was negligible.

The incident reminded fans of Kieron Dyer and Lee Bowyer's infamous fight that saw both Newcastle players sent off.

Dyer and Bowyer traded blows in the centre of the park before both being handed their marching orders, leaving Newcastle with nine men.

However, despite being down to ten, Everton took the lead in the clash as Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall beat Bruno Fernandes and Leny Yoro on the edge of the box before firing the ball into top corner.
