Idrissa Gueye sent off striking Everton team-mate Michael Keane in remarkable scenes

Everton's Idrissa Gueye was remarkably sent off for striking team-mate Michael Keane in Monday night's clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Gueye was seething with Keane for giving the ball away close to his own goal, allowing United captain Bruno Fernandes a shot in the 13th minute, which went narrowly wide.

The [Everton](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/all-about/everton-fc) duo then came together in the aftermath of the shot, which both furious at the other's role in the incident.

This resulted in Gueye raising his hand towards the face of Keane, with referee Tony Harrington deciding that he was left with no choice but to send off the midfielder.

But when Gueye refused to leave the pitch, he had to be escorted towards the tunnel by Jordan Pickford and Iliman Ndiaye.

Gueye was sent off for violent conduct, with the law for such an offence dictating that he was guilty of: "Striking an opponent or any other person, on the head or face with their hand or arm, unless the force used was negligible."

[BBC](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/all-about/bbc) Radio Five Live co-commentator Joe Hart disagreed with the decision, saying: "The referee wasn't even close enough to hear what Idrissa Gueye was saying but he was in Michael Keane's face, who is considerably bigger than him and shoved him off with one arm.

"When he came over to continue the argument, the referee just casually walked over and sent him off. Jordan Pickford did very well in the situation.

"If that's all that happened though, it isn't a red card. Something must've been brewing between them two. We'll see how this one unfolds..."

Gueye's red card came after just 13 minutes, before Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall gave Everton the lead with a fine goal in the 29th minute.
