It's been one disaster after another on the injury front for the Washington Commanders this season. But it's starting to look like the bye week gave players with ailments a chance to heal and make a lasting impact down the stretch.
Reports indicate that superstar quarterback Jayden Daniels is returning to practice, although his involvement in Week 13 against the Denver Broncos remains unlikely. There is still a lot to decide before things become official, but sitting one more week wouldn't be the worst idea in the world.
There was another intriguing development. Noah Brown, who's been something of a forgotten man this season, also had his 21-day return window opened by the Commanders. The wide receiver hasn't been seen since Week 2 against the Green Bay Packers due to a knee complication. Now, there is enough confidence to ramp up his recovery before potentially getting involved at some stage over the remaining six contests.
Noah Brown set for long-awaited Commanders return with future hanging in the balance
And make no mistake; the Commanders need all the help they can get in the wideout room.
Terry McLaurin is also working his way back, but Luke McCaffrey is a long-term absentee. Washington has been relying on journeymen and unproven young players to plug the gap. Some have shone with increased responsibilities, so adding Brown back into the mix could jeopardize the momentum players like Jaylin Lane and Treylon Burks have generated.
It's a fine line. The Commanders' season is lost, so they must evaluate the entire roster. Brown probably won't be back next season, although he will want the chance to change the tide. If so, that should come at the expense of Chris Moore or Robbie Chosen, who are also likely to depart next spring.
This is an interesting dynamic. Brown is a sharp route runner who can stretch the field. Even so, there is just no telling how much he can contribute after so long out of action. The fact that he is back at practice is encouraging, but anyone expecting miracles is kidding themselves.
What cannot be disputed is the need for Brown to leave a good impression before the offseason. He hasn't given up hope of another short-term deal in Washington. But if the Commanders go in a different direction, some solid outings down the stretch could be enough for another team to take the plunge.
Time will tell on all fronts. But if anyone deserves some good luck on the health front, it's Brown.
