Philadelphia Eagles: Promising Rookie Out Indefinitely

Both of the Philadelphia Eagles’ starting safeties suffered injuries against the Dallas Cowboys. Reed Blankenship exited the third quarter due to a thigh injury and did not return for the remainder of the game. Andrew Mukuba was carted off in the last drive because of an ankle injury and was spotted wearing a walking boot and using crutches on his way to the team bus.

According to Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo of NFL Network,Andrew Mukuba suffered a fractured ankle that will require surgery. Surgery will ultimately determine whether the promising second-round will return this season; in the meantime, he will be sidelined indefinitely. If Mukuba is out for the season, he had a strong rookie year, recording 46 tackles, two TFLs, a half sack, two interceptions, and three pass deflections across 11 games and ten starts.

It’s unclear who will replace him at safety, especially with Reed Blankenship’s status for Week 13 still uncertain. Sydney Brown stepped in for Blankenship, and over the final three plays, Cooper DeJean shifted to safety after previously playing on the outside earlier when Adoree’ Jackson left in the third quarter. Lastly, Michael Carter Jr. was then inserted in the slot for the rest of the game.

Marcus Epps suffered an undisclosed injury in Week 8 against the New York Giants, resulting in the Eagles placing him on injured reserve ahead of Week 9. As a result, the veteran safety has missed the previous three games and four weeks. Since the team had a BYE in Week 9 and Epps has missed only three games, he must remain on IR for at least one more game and will not play against the Chicago Bears.
