It’s hard to disagree with Ferdinand. United got a lot wrong against Everton, and despite some bad performances, a lot of the blame also has to lie with Amorim.

The United boss agreed with Ferdinand post-match that there was a lack of “intensity”, which was a major catalyst in the loss materialising.

He told BBC Sport: “They were the better team with 11 players and 10. I felt we were not there with the same intensity. They deserved the win.

“The other team helped us with the sending off. We need to do [more] in every moment. If they have 10 let’s push them to the final third. We need to do more.”

Does it feel like a step back? “Yes. Especially in the way we played the game. Forget the result. The result is really bad but I was more concerned by the feeling I had during the game.

“Everyone should play better today.”

He told Sky Sports after the victory: “I’ve tried coming here with 11 men and not get over the line. It was an important one for us. We brought brilliant support here.

“For 80 minutes we were on the back foot. We did some really good stuff in the opening part of the game. We were nice and fluid. To get over the line took a big job.”
