David Moyes praised his leading attacking stars for their defensive resilience after Everton’s impressive win at Manchester United. Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye have been crucial to the progress made in the Blues’ attack this season, the pair dazzling defences to create chances and provide crucial goals.

But on Monday night it was their work in the other half of the pitch that caught the eye as they battled to protect the lead given to their side by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s first half goal.

That they had a lead to defend was remarkable after an opening 15 minutes in which club captain Seamus Coleman was forced off injured and Idrissa Gueye was sent off for a spat with teammate Michael Keane.

Everton overcame that to take the lead and then, courtesy of a gusty display at the back, hold on to a first win at Old Trafford since 2013 and only the club’s third of the Premier League era.

After the match, Moyes said: “The two of them did an amazing job, physically. Jack said he ran a bit tonight, you know that? Jack was really good, the work they needed to do to get back, and there was a couple of times in the second half I was saying: ‘My goodness, are you going to make it all the way?’

“Ili as well, Ili did a brilliant job for us and they've been great attacking players for us and actually in the early part of the game both of them were a threat as well.

“Just the longer it went, we got pushed back so far.”
