Idrissa Gueye has issued a public apology to his Everton teammates following his bizarre red card in Monday’s 1-0 Premier League win over Manchester United at Old Trafford.
The Toffees admirably battled their way to maximum points against the Red Devils despite playing for over 70 minutes of the match with a man down following Gueye’s feisty exchange with teammate Michael Keane.
Gueye was shown a straight red card by referee Tony Harrington after just 13 minutes with the score at 0-0 after the irate 36-year-old midfielder raised his hand to slap Keane across the face.
The Senegal international has made over 240 Premier League appearances across spells with Everton and Aston Villa and is considered an invaluable member of Moyes’ first-team squad.
However, a rush of blood to the head from Gueye represents just the third incident in Premier League history where a player, or multiple players, have been sent off for fighting a teammate, after Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer for Newcastle in 2005, and Ricardo Fuller with Andy Griffin for Stoke City in 2008.

Gueye ‘takes full responsibility’ after seeing red for slapping Keane
Despite Gueye’s moment of madness, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall produced a moment of brilliance as he curled a superb strike into the top corner just before the half-hour mark, and that proved to be the difference as Everton claimed a famous win at Old Trafford to climb up to 11th in the table.
After the match, Gueye took to Instagram to issue an apology for his actions, and he will now serve a three-match suspension for violent conduct.
"I want to apologise first to my teammate Michael (Keane),” said Gueye in a 60-word statement.
"I take full responsibility for my reaction. I also apologise to my teammates, the staff, the fans and the club. What happened does not reflect who I am or the values I stand for.
"Emotions can run high, but nothing justifies such behaviour. I'll make sure it never happens again."
Moyes addressed the incident at full time and while he expressed his disappointment over the red card, he has admitted that he actually likes his players to fight against each other.

Moyes: “I quite like my players fighting each other”
"I like my players fighting each other." Moyes told Sky Sports: "If nothing happened, I don't think anyone in the stadium would have been surprised
"I thought the referee could have taken a bit longer to think about it. I got told that the rules of the game that if you slap your own player, you could be in trouble.
"But there's another side to it, I quite like my players fighting each other, if someone didn't do the right action. If you want that toughness and resilience to get a result, you want someone to act on it.
"I'm disappointed we get the sending off, but we've all been footballers, we get angry with our teammates.
"He's apologised for the sending off, he's praised the players and thanked them for it and apologised for what happened."
Moyes has said that Gueye's teammates applauded when the midfielder stood in front of the group and apologised.
"Big enough to stand up and say he made a mistake. I've accepted it, we all move on," the Scotsman added.
Everton will face Newcastle United, Bournemouth and Sean Dyche’s Nottingham Forest in their next three Premier League games, and Gueye will miss all three before returning from suspension to face Chelsea away from home on December 13.
