Josko Gvardiol reflects on the ‘worst season’ of his career

Josko Gvardiol looked back at the struggles of **Man City**from the 2024/25 season.

The Citizens came into the campaign with four successive Premier League crowns to their name, and they started the schedule with four straight victories. But after a 2-2 draw against Arsenal, in which **Rodri**suffered a season-ending ACL injury, things started to unravel. Mateo Kovacic covered for the Ballon d’Or winner, but once he went down with health problems, City could not engineer a response.

In the end, the club failed to defend their title, lost the **FA Cup**final 1-0 to Crystal Palace, and bowed out of the Champions League in the playoffs against Real Madrid. There was no major honour at the Etihad Stadium for the first time since 2017, the debut season of **Pep Guardiola**in England, and it was a stern reminder that standards cannot afford to slip at the elite level of football.

Gvardiol and the group want to learn from that experience, but they wish to avoid any repeat.

“The rhythm is quite difficult to deal with. It’s much easier than last season. We still have a lot of work to do. Every game is a priority; that’s why we play football. No matter which competition it is, we want to win all the games.

“It’s the worst season so far that I have done. It was painful. I remember last season, I couldn’t sleep at night. I was trying to help the team and the club to get out of this position, but things were not going the way we wanted.

““I’m glad it’s behind us and we recovered well. In football I say It’s good that in three days there is a new game, it forces you to forget what happened. We all see already that the situation in the club is much different and in a better way than last season.”
