David Moyes Had Hilarious Response After Surreal Everton Red Card In Old Trafford Win

10-man Everton claimed a famous victory on Monday night, as they won at Old Trafford for only the second time in 32 years.

Not since David Moyes was in the home dugout have Everton beaten Manchester United away from home, and Moyesy would finally secure his first league win at Old Trafford as a visiting manager on Monday.

It was a dramatic game, with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's outstanding first half strike seeing the Toffees hold on for a 1-0 victory.

Everton's cause was helped by a truly woeful Manchester United performance, but they deserve credit for battling on with only 10 men on the field for almost 80 minutes.

The red card came after just 13 minutes, thanks to a bizarre moment of madness from midfielder Idrissa Gueye.

Gueye confronted teammate Michael Keane after the centre-back misread Gueye's pass, leading to a big chance for Bruno Fernandes. The pair's squabble escalated, with Gueye ultimately striking Keane on the face.

The merits of the sending off have been widely debated, and it marked just the third time in Premier League history that a player has been sent off for an altercation with their own teammate.

Whether or not the referee should have intervened has been the biggest point of debate, but the vast majority of football fans agree that Gueye owed an apology to his Everton teammates, at the very least. Speaking post-match, David Moyes had an extremely surprising alternative take on the incident.

David Moyes "liked" aspect of bizarre Everton red card

David Moyes was ecstatic after Monday night's win for his Everton side at Manchester United.

The former United boss was, understandably, asked about the controversial first half clash that led to Idrissa Gueye's red card. Rather than outright criticise the Senegalese midfielder, Moyes quipped that it showed the fighting spirit he wanted from his players.

"I'm surprised," Moyes said of the red card.

I think, if nothing happened, I don't think anybody in the stadium would be surprised.

I thought the referee could have maybe taken a little bit longer to think about it, maybe gone over and sorted it, had a think about it.

I'm being told that the rules of the game mean that if you slap your own player or you lift an arm in some way, then you could be in trouble.

But, you know, there's another side to it. I quite like my players fighting each other. And getting annoyed at each other, you know, because it was a bad ball, or you didn't do the right action, or whatever.

I think that's part of it, if you want a winning team and you want that resilience and the toughness that got us the result, then you need players that are going to react that way.

I'm disappointed we got the sending off, but everyone will tell you, we've all been footballers, and the ones that have been will tell you that, quite often, you'll get angry with your teammates.

Perhaps not the reaction many would have expected from a Premier League manager to two players infighting.

Idrissa Gueye has since posted an apology to Michael Keane and his Everton teammates on Instagram.

"I want to apologise first to my teammate Michael Keane," Gueye wrote.

I take full responsibility for my reaction.

I also apologise to my teammates, the staff, the fans and the club.

What happened does not reflect who I am or the values I stand for. Emotions can run high, but nothing justifies such behaviour. I'll make sure it never happens again."

David Moyes sheds light on Seamus Coleman injury

It was a night to remember for David Moyes, but perhaps a difficult night for captain Seamus Coleman.

Fresh off the back of his heroics for Ireland against Portugal and Hungary, Coleman was rewarded with a first Premier League start of the season.

The 37-year-old would last just 10 minutes before withdrawing with an apparent hamstring issue, and Moyes said he was sad to see his captain forced off so early.

I'm surprised, because Seamus has played a few games. He just felt a knick in his hamstring and that was it. That happened very quickly, so that was a disruption to us as well, then obviously the sending off as well.

Those things happen in football, you've got to cope with them.

It's not easy to cope with them sometimes, especially losing a player to a sending off. But, look, the players did a brilliant job tonight.

Ireland fans will certainly hope there are no long-term issues for Seamus Coleman, with the World Cup playoffs ahead in March.

For now, Coleman and his Everton teammates can celebrate a rare scalp after Monday's battling victory over Manchester United.
