A.J. Brown finally said what Eagles fans have been waiting for all season

A.J. Brown’s pre- and post-game press conferences have almost become must-see TV for fans of the Philadelphia Eagles.

The three-time All-Pro wide receiver has never shied away from speaking his mind to the media, even when he (and the entire NFL world) knows that any response he gives about his role in the offense, or quarterback Jalen Hurts, could light up social media channels like wildfire.

Brown’s public comments have been harmless this season, focusing mainly on his frustrations with the offense being a sidecar this season, and his personal desire to be a bigger part of the solution. Still, he’s drawn criticism for being a locker room distraction, and his effort was called into question during Philly’s ugly, 16-9 win over the Detroit Lions in Week 11, particularly on one deep ball down the left sideline from Hurts that he appeared to slow up on.

Brown responded early in the Eagles’ 24-21 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. He snared a 16-yard touchdown reception on Philly’s opening drive and finished with a season-high eight catches for 110 yards.

He was heavily involved in the game plan… that is, until the Eagles’ offense screeched to a halt in the second half. Philly punted on all three of its possessions in the third quarter, netting just 28 yards. Their fourth-quarter possessions included a missed field goal and two lost fumbles (one on a punt return).

Eagles fans were eager to hear what Brown had to say about that one, but he struck a much different tone during his 7-minute session with the media from the visitors’ locker room on Sunday.

Philadelphia Eagles WR A.J. Brown took accountability for his team’s loss to Dallas (even though he shouldn’t have)

Brown has scoffed at questions regarding his effort and energy levels this season, but he was quick to shoulder the blame for Week 12’s loss to the Cowboys.

“I’m only talking about myself. I even had a false start. I’ve got to be on the same page, know the snap count. … Overall, it was just self-inflicted wounds. When you’re behind the sticks, that makes it very tough. … We’ve just got to be better as a unit, including myself.”

He also lamented his first-quarter touchdown reception that was negated by a scoring review. Brown made a clean catch and reached the ball out to the front pylon, but only got one of his two feet in bounds.

“That’s on me,” he said. “I didn’t get my feet down. Like I said, it’s simple, but we all have things that we need to continue to work on. I did the hard part. I just didn’t do the easy part.”

The Eagles had plenty of culprits in Sunday’s loss, from their 14 accepted penalties to some questionable play calling with a multi-score lead to fourth-quarter fumbles by running back Saquon Barkley and punt returner Xavier Gipson.

Brown was obviously well down that list. He could have handled his postgame press conference any number of ways, but he chose the most refreshing one — showing leadership by taking some accountability, rather than deflecting blame to coaches and teammates following one of his best statistical games of the season.

If the Eagles are going to repeat as Super Bowl champions this season, they’re going to need Brown to be completely dialed in. Sunday might’ve been a positive sign in that regard, even after the most brutal loss of the season to date.
