Top referee handed Real Madrid and Albion fixtures

Michael Oliver will referee [Albion](https://www.theargus.co.uk/sport/albion/?ref=au) and Real Madrid away games this week.

By coincidence, he will also visit two Evangelos Marinakis-owned clubs in the space of a few days.

And Nottingham Forest might have clear memories of the part he played last time they faced the Seagulls.

The UEFA official from Northumberland will head back from Greece to take charge of Albion's fixture at Forest on Sunday.

Oliver will have the whistle on Wednesday night as Olympiacos host Madrid in the Champions League.

That will be his 18th game of the season, across all competitions including international matches.

He has shown 54 yellow cards in his first 17, for an average of a little over three per game.

His two red cards include the dismissal of Burnley’s Lesley Oguchukwu in their 1-0 home defeat to Liverpool.

Albion last saw Oliver in their recent, incident-free, 3-0 win at home to Leeds.

He took charge when they won 2-0 at Wolves towards the end of last season.

Forest have not seen Oliver this term but will recall his part in the 0-0 FA Cup draw at the Amex last season.

Oliver was on VAR duty and recommended Peter Bankes review his decision to award Forest a penalty.

Bankes went to the screen and eventually ruled Kaoru Mitoma had NOT committed a foul – to Forest fury.

Oliver’s standing in the game is underlined by some of the fixtures he has refereed this season.

Most recently, last Sunday’s North London derby but also Liverpool v Manchester United, Barcelona v PSG and a potential World Cup qualifying group decider between Turkey and Spain.

The full officiating team for Nottingham Forest v Albion is as follows.

Referee: Michael Oliver. Assistants: James Mainwaring, Wade Smith. Fourth official: Tom Bramall. VAR: Michael Salisbury. Assistant VAR: Marc Perry.
