Ruben Amorim said Everton deserved their victory at Old Trafford and even disagreed with the decision that gave his Manchester United side an advantage for more than 75 minutes The Red Devils said he was “disappointed” after David Moyes the Blues to their first at the ground since 2013.

And Amorim echoed the Everton manager’s post-match opinion that in-fighting within a squad is not always a bad thing.

In a damning reflection on a dismal night for him and United, he concluded: “The other team fight each other and we didn’t understand the moments of the game and that is my fault, I need to explain every moment."

A dejected Amorim sent the Red Devils into the clash off the back of a five-game unbeaten run and with an opportunity to push into the Champions League places with victory.

Instead they melted under the lights - a feat even more remarkable given the Blues had Idrissa Gueye sent off after a spat with team-mate Michael Keane in the first half.

Amorim said: "[I feel] Frustration, disappointment about the way we played the game.

"They were the better team with 11, they defended really well for 70 minutes with 10 men. I think we deserved to lose.

"We didn’t play well, we didn’t play with the right intensity.

"We talk about this a lot [about what went wrong], I know which point we are at the moment, I have that feeling during this run."

Amorim questioned the intensity of his team on the night - a criticism that extended to the red card.

He said: "Fighting is not a bad thing, doesn’t mean they don’t like each other. I don’t agree with that sending off, we can fight with team-mates.

"I hope my players, when they lose the ball, they fight each other.

"They cannot be a sending off, but my players show many games that we can do it. Today we didn’t manage to do it."

Blues boss Moyes said of the sending off: "I didn't think there was anything in it. I was a bit annoyed that they were challenging each other at the time.

"I was also quite pleased, quite pleased they were fighting each other, because it showed me that they cared and it showed me that there's a bit of that and that's what's in Everton."
