“You have to be 120%”–Belief Liverpool player doesn’t want to be a burden

On Monday, TuttoJuve covered interest from Inter Milan, AC Milan and AS Roma in Liverpool’s Federico Chiesa.

The two Milan clubs are believed to be leading the race for the winger. Reports have also spoken of Napoli interest in the former Juventus star.

Cheisa’s future is under daily scrutiny in Italy because of his lack of prominence under Arne Slot. The Liverpool player is also in focus because he’s rejected multiple Italy call-ups, wanting to concentrate on fitness for the Reds despite Slot not being his biggest fan.

Former Azzurri international David di Michele has spoken to Tuttomercatoweb about the 28-year-old’s situation.

He understands Chiesa’s decision not to play for Italy, noting that he is trying to get better.

Di Michele said: “I really like him. He’s a fast, agile player, a dribbler, with a good shot and strength. He’s an important player who, unfortunately, has had some injuries that have somewhat hampered his career.”

Liverpool player can’t pause Italy forever

Federico Chiesa

FRANKFURT, GERMANY – 22 OCTOBER, 2025: Federico Chiesa – UEFA Champions League, match SG Eintracht Frankfurt vs Liverpool FC at Deutsche Bank Park.

Speaking further about the winger’s situation, Di Michele said:

“And today, he rightly wants to be mentally and physically fit first to be able to perform at his best. He doesn’t want to go to the national team and be a burden, perhaps replacing someone else. Making a name for himself at Liverpool isn’t easy; you have to be at 120% to compete with the others.”

Chiesa doesn’t want to take a spot for Italy for granted, instead want to wait until he’s at his best.

That may not happen at Liverpool. He has contributed to three goals in 139 minutes in the Premier League, but despite that, Arne Slot hasn’t shown an inclination towards starting him.

Leaving in the January window would almost certainly provide more opportunities. Some in Italy may understand Chiesa’s stance but it’s not something he can continue long term without his international career being taken away.
