Rick Fox, the Bahamian NBA champion, actor and businessman, has added another title — politician.
As many Bahamians were focused on the Golden Isles by-election on Monday, Fox announced that he will be a candidate in the next general election, but did not say which constituency he will run in, or whether he will run for a political party or as an independent.
He recently said he met with both the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) and Free National Movement (FNM) about possibly joining one of them.
But on Monday, he said his announcement, which was made on social media, was “bigger than party politics”.
“For months, I’ve been listening closely to the hopes and frustrations of my fellow Bahamians. One truth is clear: the future of The Bahamas will depend on the choices we make right now,” Fox said.
“You’ve shared that you want more transparency, a modern economy that prioritizes affordability and security, and a country where opportunity is our reality, not just a promise.
“I share that vision. And I’m stepping forward today because we cannot wait any longer to realize a Bahamas that we all envision is possible.”
He said The Bahamas is running out of time to empower youth with real opportunities and build a nation that runs efficiently, innovates boldly, and leads globally. He said the country is also running out of time needed to deliver world-class healthcare, affordable housing, safe communities, and compete on the global stage.
Fox said The Bahamas must move with clarity, courage, honor and integrity.
“We will embrace innovation, education, security and opportunity as the pillars of our future,” he said.
“We will build a future where Bahamians can compete, influence, and lead globally without having to ever leave home.
“We will trust in the Lord with all of our hearts. We will not lean on our own understanding and in all of our ways, we will acknowledge him and he will direct our path.”
He pledged, “As a candidate and as a leader for The Bahamas, I will demand transparency, honesty, integrity while demanding a level of excellence from all of us.”
Fox did not give any indication of his team, or any other specifics.
A general election is constitutionally due in 2026.
