David Moyes' blunt message that inspired Everton to break Premier League record at Man Utd

Despite being down to 10 men inside 14 minutes, Everton took the lead at Old Trafford thanks to Kiernan Dewsbury Hall and were too streetwise for the home side as they dug in and held on to win 1-0

Jordan Pickford has revealed how a blunt message from David Moyes inspired Everton's famous win at Old Trafford. The Toffees are celebrating becoming the first team in Premier League history to triumph at Manchester United after going down to 10 men.

Despite Idrissa Gueye getting sent off inside 14 minutes, the visitors triumphed thanks to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's stunning strike. And it was Moyes's first win at Old Trafford as a visiting boss in 18 attempts.

But Pickford reckons Moyes should thanks himself for the stunning result - after telling his players before kick off how Everton needed to win at United to be considered a "proper team".

Pickford said: "The manager said before the game, 'you want to be a proper team, you want to push up the table, tonight's the time to go and stamp your authority on it and get a result'. We know it's not as easy as that, but we gave what the gaffer wanted and we got our rewards.

"It's a great win, great performance. Some good football as well, but suffering at times as a team. If you’re suffering the right way, you get results.

"Football's weird because Manchester United are in form at the minute. If they had won they would have been top four - and everyone's talking about them.

"We have to look at ourselves, and we've got to put our performance on and not focus on how well United are doing, because once we put our performance in and our shift we can get results."

Pickford acted as the peacemaker, after Gueye had slapped team-mate Michael Keane in the face to get his marching orders.

And when asked what happened, Pickford added: "Initially I didn't see what happened, "I just saw them arguing. But the main thing is that Idrissa come in and apologised.

"It doesn't look nice ever, but we move on from it - and the main thing is we've got the win."

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher believes no club in the country wants to see red cards given for altercations between team-mates and while he acknowledged match official Tony Harrington correctly applied the rules by punishing Gueye, suggested referees chief Howard Webb could consider making a change.

“I think every club up and down this country if they were in that situation – against them or for them – would say, ‘just give him a yellow card and get on with the game and manage the situation’,” said former Liverpool defender Carragher.

“The rules are there, I get that. But Howard Webb has a phrase, we’re always trying to speak to him about certain decisions, and he talks about sometimes the game doesn’t want something in a certain situation.

“I think most people watching tonight, if that was their own team, they’d probably think, ‘OK, yellow card, get the players together, behave yourselves, get on with the game’.”
