Brock Purdy just stirred up his own QB controversy in worst way possible

The 49ers got the win and that's all that counts, but proponents of the story that there's a quarterback controversy brewing certainly had some new ammunition to use for better or for worse.

The San Francisco 49ers had some bumps on Monday Night Football, but some key defensive performances and a relentless performance by offensive superstars Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle saw the team win 20-9 and put themselves on the inside track for the playoffs.

Unfortunately, it wasn't a complete game on the offensive side of the ball, though, as quarterback Brock Purdy unfortunately just had a completely horrendous first half where he threw three interceptions, and for all the world, just didn't look at all like making the right decision when throwing deep.

That won't ease discussions whether or not San Francisco would be better off with Purdy's backup, Mac Jones, back under center after the latter admirably held the line when Purdy was out with a turf-toe injury.

To Brock's credit, he did right the ship after halftime and looked a lot more in command of the offense. He did throw a little down the field, but instead, the Niners embraced a more conservative philosophy that allowed them to keep hold of the ball and take the air out of the game.

Purdy would finish the game 23-of-32 passing for 192 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions. As mentioned, Purdy was much more solid for the second half of the game, and the Panthers were simply not able to get back into the contest.

The 49ers will have a big trap game ahead, though, taking on the Cleveland Browns, who boast a defense that's going to keep them in every game. Purdy will need to make sure he's got the right throws for that game for the Niners to win to go 9-4 and cement at least a winning record for the season.

For now, though, expect some people who like to excel in giving Purdy a hard time to be licking their lips for the upcoming week.
