Former Man United defender Gary Neville has criticised Ruben Amorim’s tactical approach against Everton on Monday night, as Man United lost.
The Red Devils saw a fantastic opportunity to seize the game against Everton by the horns after just 13 minutes at Old Trafford, after Idrissa Gueye was sent off for swiping at his own teammate Jordan Pickford.
However, United failed to take control of the game and ended up conceding to Everton in the 29th minute when Kiernan Dwesbury-Hall scored, and they couldn’t manage to even find an equaliser against a David Moyes side that had 10 men for the majority of the match.

It was such a big chance for United to get three points, and if they had, it would have left them going into their next game against Crystal Palace in the top four and the Champions League places.
Neville slams Amorim’s Man United tactics
After the game, former United defender Gary Neville was furious that the Red Devils couldn’t capitalise on a one-man advantage, and even spelled out to Ruben Amorim just how simple it is to play against a depleted opposition.
Neville said on the Gary Neville Podcast: “It’s pretty damn obvious how you play against 10 men. You shift the ball quicker, you shift it from side to side, you switch play, you stretch the pitch and make it as big as possible, and this pitch always feels big at Old Trafford, you make sure that you literally run the other team ragged.”
He particularly criticised Amorim’s reluctance to change his three at the back formation, especially as the game went on and United remained 1-0 down.
“The three at the back had to change.” Neville added, “I know Ruben Amorim says he’ll never change his three at the back system, but I’m sorry, Luke Shaw has to go up and play like a left winger, bring Yoro round with De Ligt, make sure they mark [Thierno] Barry, make sure he doesn’t get the ball, and Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes move forward, make sure you don’t play to deep.
“The rest of the players, make sure you create some sort of overload. Man United left one up top for the whole game, you need two up.United were so pedestrian and so negative…change your system.”
United will face a sterner test in their next match as it is a trip to a hostile Selhurst Park, where things could go from bad to worse for Amorim.
