David Moyes 'surprised' as he provides an update on Seamus Coleman's Everton injury

Everton managed to secure a first win away at Manchester United in almost 12 years on Monday evening in a 1-0 victory over the Red Devils.

The Toffees’ hopes of a famous Premier League win were marred by Idrissa Gana Gueye’s red card for striking teammate Michael Keane, but Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s superb effort from the edge of the box put them 1-0 up against the odds.

Everton defended superbly from there, barely giving United a sight of goal and when they did, Jordan Pickford was equal to any challenge posed by Bruno Fernandes, Joshua Zirkzee and Bryan Mbeumo.

But one defender who didn’t take part in the majority of the game was Seamus Coleman, due to an early injury – and David Moyes has issued an update on his availability.

Moyes says Seamus Coleman was removed due to a hamstring injury

Seamus Coleman had started both World Cup qualifier games for Ireland in the international break, and he was rewarded with a spot to face the Red Devils on Monday night.

However, seemingly innocuously, he was substituted inside 10 minutes against Ruben Amorim’s side, being replaced by Jake O’Brien.

And David Moyes gave an update on his injury at the end of the game, telling Sky Sports: “I was surprised he picked something up because he has played a few minutes recently.

A night to remember for Everton. It was their first Premier League win at Old Trafford since 2013.

“He just felt a nick in his hamstring, which was a bit of a disruption to us.

“These things happen in football and you have to cope with them.”

Coleman’s last start for the Toffees in the Premier League was on Boxing Day, and he now looks like he’ll wait a while longer for his next start in the top-flight before his contract ends in June.

Jake O’Brien will now surely be Everton’s trusted right-back going forward

Jake O’Brien was dropped for the game against Fulham, with James Garner instead trusted at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, before Coleman was instated at right-back at Old Trafford.

However, Idrissa Gana Gueye’s red card means that Everton now have a slight midfield shortage, and Garner will be used in the middle.

Nathan Patterson is still on the sidelines and with Coleman joining him, O’Brien is now the clear first choice until at least mid-December.

O’Brien has impressed at right-back, even scoring goals from that position last season, and after a spell out of the side he’ll now be trusted going forwards.

Although he’s yet to register a goal or assist this season, Moyes will be left with no other choice at least until mid-December.
