Arteta issues fresh Odegaard injury update ahead of Arsenal vs Bayern

Nearing return: Martin Odegaard

Arsenal Football Newsletter

The Gunners’ captain has been out since October with a knee injury that he suffered against West Ham on his return from a shoulder problem.

The Norwegian was reported to have been pushing to play in the north London derby - which Arsenal won 4-1 - but Arteta explained that he was “not 100%”.

Now, however, the Spaniard has said that Odegaard could play against Bayern tomorrow, having taken part in team training on Tuesday.

“We are going to have a meeting now to decide on Martin,” the Arsenal boss said at his pre-match press conference.

“He was really close for the last game. We are hopeful that tomorrow he can be involved.”

Arsenal sit second in the Champions League table behind tomorrow’s opponents, having won all of their four games on the continent so far.

Incredible days out and trips for autumn and winter

A return for Odegaard will come as a huge boost for Arteta, but it will give the head coach a selection headache when considering Eberchi Eze’s recent form, with the England international hitting a hat-trick against Tottenham over the weekend.

Arteta also gave an update on Viktor Gyokeres and Kai Havertz’s fitness, with both players’ absences leaving Mikel Merino as the makeshift No9 once more for the north Londoners.

Neither will be available against Bayern, but the Arsenal boss hopes to have both the Swede and the German fit and ready to play for their game against Chelsea this weekend.

“Really good both of them,” Arteta said of the pair.

“So in the next few days they are going to have a repeat scan to see if we can push them for the weekend.”
