Liverpool have seen their form in the Premier League slump over recent times under Arne Slot

They are back in action on Wednesday in the Champions League as they look to bounce back. The Merseyside outfit face PSV at home. They then return to league duties at the weekend with an away trip to the London Stadium on Sunday afternoon to face West Ham.

Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai compared to Steven Gerrard by Joe Cole

Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai has been compared to Steven Gerrard by former player Joe Cole. The Hungary international, who has 61 caps for his country under his belt, has caught the eye for the Reds this season, despite their struggles as a team. He has been on the books of his current club since joining them in 2023.

Cole has delivered his verdict, as per a report by TNT Sports: “I love him. It’s even more impressive how well he’s playing because of the functionality of the Liverpool team isn’t there. So he’s almost, and I’m going to throw a name in here, been Steven Gerrard-esque.

“The Liverpool team that Stevie played in was nowhere near as good as this team. Not nowhere near, it wasn’t as good as this team. Szoboszlai has just taken the game by the scruff of the neck.”

Owen Hargreaves added: “He’s an old school number 10, but now he’s learned the defensive side of the game. He’s amazing. His passing is top.”

Liverpool ace Dominik Szoboszlai catching the eye under Arne Slot

Liverpool signed Szoboszlai just over two years ago to bolster their squad. He injects valuable quality into their side and is becoming one of their most prized assets. The 25-year-old has made 111 appearances in all competitions and has scored 17 goals, two of which have come in this campaign. Prior to his move to England, he had spells at RB Leipzig and RB Salzburg and has since adapted well to life in England.

The Reds haven’t been able to find the right formula this term. They won the title earlier this year and were looking to retain their crown. However, they have fallen way behind the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City recently.

Slot is under pressure to turn things around. He was picked as Jurgen Klopp’s replacement last year after impressing in his native Holland with Feyenoord. His first year couldn’t have gone any better but he is really being tested now.

The Dutchman was heavily backed in the last transfer window with signings like Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Hugo Ekitike, among others. Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah were also both handed new two-year deals running until June 2027. However, Slot hasn’t been able to find his best starting XI and if anything, he has too many options to pick from that has caused him a selection headache.
