Wirtz, Frimpong, Gomez - Liverpool injury news and return dates ahead of PSV clash

Arne Slot is without a number of key players ahead of the club's Champions League clash with PSV.

Florian Wirtz goes down with an injury.

Liverpool and Arne Slot have not had any time to feel sorry for themselves after the disappointing 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest at Anfield last weekend. The Reds have had a quick turnaround ahead of Wednesday night's clash with Eredivisie outfit PSV - and will be hoping to bounce back in style as they did against Eintracht Frankfurt earlier on this season.

It's no secret that Slot's squad have struggled to replicate the incredible form which saw them qualify in pole position in the Champions League league phase and win the Premier League title. There are a number of injury concerns heading into the PSV meeting, with West Ham on the horizon next weekend.

With that in mind, The ECHO has taken a closer look at Slot’s current injury concerns and when those players are expected to return to action;

Joe Gomez

The Reds were dealt a fresh injury blow ahead of the clash with the Dutch side, with the Liverpool boss revealing Joe Gomez has been struggling with a knee injury.

"He is one of the five defenders we have," said Slot. "Normally I wouldn't go into the details that much, but he had an injection last week on his knee.

"Apart from me making the decision to play Dom in that position, it is to do with him not being completely fit.

"He is in the group for tomorrow, as he was on Saturday, but he wasn't able to train last week every single time."

Expected return date: November 26 vs PSV (H)

Florian Wirtz

Wirtz was a surprise injury blow after returning from international duty with Germany nursing a minor issue. He missed the defeat to Forest, but Liverpool do not believe the injury is a serious one.

That being said, Slot offered no indication as to whether the playmaker would be back in the squad to play PSV. Meaning his latest update came ahead of the clash with Forest.

"Florian should be able to play after [Forest], it depends on what happens after, but that shouldn’t be that long," the manager said last Friday.

Conor Bradley

Slot will be without right-back Bradley after the Northern Irishman picked up another injury on international duty. The 22-year-old missed the start of the season with a hamstring problem, but has been a regular since returning to the fold.

Bradley started both World Cup qualifiers for Northern Ireland, but was replaced at the half-time interval during their win over Luxembourg.

"I don't expect Conor to be part of the upcoming 22 days," Slot explained last week. "Maybe in the end, but not in the [next] 22 days unless something like a miracle happens, which I don’t expect."

Potential return date: December 13 vs Brighton (H)

Jeremie Frimpong

Jeremie Frimpong is also out with a hamstring problem and has struggled for fitness since he arrived from Bayer Leverkusen this summer. The Dutchman picked up the injury against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League last month and has been out ever since.

Although Liverpool had predicted Frimpong would return over the November international break, Slot's latest update suggests he'll be out for a little while longer.

"Jeremie is out just as long," he said last week. "He's not probably going to be available in the upcoming two or three weeks, as well. It's going to be interesting who all of you want to see as a right full-back."

Potential return date: December 6 vs Leeds United (A)

Giovanni Leoni

Liverpool are still without summer centre-back signing Giovanni Leoni. The 18-year-old prospect impressed on his debut against Southampton in the League Cup, but disaster struck in the second half when he was stretchered off with a knee injury.

It transpired he had sustained an ACL injury which would bring an end to his season. Slot last gave an update on the teenager following his diagnosis in September.

"He is not in a good place because he tore his ACL, which means he will be out around a year," he said. "Being so young and coming to a new country and playing so well in your first game, it's very hard to take the positives. But you try to look at that, and that is that he is still so young, and he has so many years still to go after he recovers."

Potential return date: Summer 2026
