Liverpool vs. PSV: Predicted Xi, injury news and how to watch

A return to Champions League action could help Liverpool rediscover some form against visitors PSV, though the Dutch side are 11 games unbeaten and arrive as the current Eredivisie leaders.

It was a day to forget against Nottingham Forest, with the first goal at Anfield seeing the side’s fragility come to the fore and the slump extend to eight defeats from the last 11.

Liverpool’s last victory came in this competition and supporters will hope, as is the case with every passing game, that this could start a turnaround.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Wednesday’s match.

1. 4 players still out with injury for Liverpool

Thankfully, there were no new injuries to come from Saturday’s forgettable match, but Liverpool are still without four senior players.

None of Florian Wirtz, Conor Bradley, Jeremie Frimpong or long-term absentee Giovanni Leoni were involved in training on Tuesday, with all sidelined due to respective injuries.

Calvin Ramsay was involved in the session after being named on the bench against Forest, but he is not eligible for the Champions League tie.

A group of 20 outfield players were involved on the eve of the match, including several academy players.

Liverpool squad in training pre-PSV

Goalkeepers: Alisson, Mamardashvili, Woodman, Pecsi

Defenders: Van Dijk, Konate, Gomez, Robertson, Kerkez, Ramsay*, Norris*

Midfielders: Szoboszlai, Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Jones, Endo, Nyoni

Forwards: Salah, Ekitike, Isak, Gakpo, Chiesa, Ngumoha, Gordon

* Ineligible for Champions League

2. Predicted Liverpool lineup

With injuries to consider, there is an almost straightforward lineup Slot could select for this match.

That would include starting Joe Gomez, if fit enough, at right-back to keep his midfielders in midfield.

Hugo Ekitike, you sense, is almost guaranteed to be restored – though it ought to have been the other way around with Alexander Isak when it came to starting berths.

And Andy Robertson for Milos Kerkez is also another change that should be expected.

Predicted LFC XI: Alisson; Gomez, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Szoboszlai, Gakpo; Ekitike

3. PSV arrive on 11-game unbeaten streak

For the second season in a row, Liverpool face the Dutch side, only this time the match takes place at Anfield.

PSV arrive off the back of an 11-game unbeaten run across all competitions, which has them placed atop of the Eredivisie with a six-point gap.

They have been inconsistent in the Champions League, picking up five points – which included a 6-2 win against Napoli – but have been imperious domestically with 11 wins from their first 13 games.

Ismael Saibari is their current leading goalscorer (10) across all competitions and they have a relatively clean bill of health, missing only two players due to injury.

Possible PSV XI: Kovar; Dest, Gasiorowski, Schouten, Salah-Eddine; Junior, Veerman; Man, Saibari, Perisic; Til

4. A record Liverpool must avoid

Liverpool have been kept goalless in their last two outings, and the last time they failed to score in three successive games was across January and February in 2016.

That was, of course, in the early days of Jurgen Klopp‘s first season in charge and the two squads are beyond compare.

If you are looking for positivity, though, you may be able to rest easy knowing the Reds have won each of their last 13 Champions League group/league phase matches at Anfield.

5. Joe Gomez needed painkilling injection

There were plenty of questions about the lack of involvement from Gomez over the weekend, but it came after he missed training sessions in the week leading up to Forest’s visit.

Slot has since explained that the defender required a painkilling injection for a knee injury to be available for a place on the bench.

He revealed: “Normally I wouldn’t go into detail that much, but he had an injection last week in his knee. That’s normally not because you don’t feel anything!

“Apart from maybe me making the decision to play Dom or someone else, this is also to do with him not being completely fit.”

Gomez’s place in the squad was confirmed, but perhaps expectations need to be managed as to his starting chances.

6. Arne Slot discusses “ridiculous” Liverpool slump

Speaking on the eve of the match, Slot was peppered with questions about Liverpool’s form and what comes next from reporters, and he described the present moment as “ridiculous:”

“I would describe it (the situation) as ridiculous, almost. Something I did not expect to be in.

“Not at any club I was going to work at, let alone if you manage Liverpool. That is unbelievable.

“If you can even find an excuse, you will never find enough excuses to make you perform like this. That’s unexpected for the club, for me and everyone.

“But I am also working at a club where if you need to face it, this is the best club to face it.

“The harder it gets at a club like this, the more we are together, the more we are trying to achieve the things Liverpool usually achieve.”

7. Elsewhere in the Champions League

At the same time Liverpool host PSV, there is a battle between two of the three remaining clubs with a perfect record as Arsenal host Bayern Munich.

Inter, another with four successive wins, travel to Spain to face Atletico Madrid, while Tottenham make the journey to PSG.

All but Atletico sit inside the top 10, and the Reds could benefit from several teams dropping points, though they must first successfully do their job!

Every Champions League matchday, there is a Youth League game that mirrors the contest and this time Liverpool’s U19s host PSV at Kirkby.

The match gets underway at 2pm (GMT), which you can watch live on All Red Video, and they typically guarantee entertainment.

The young Reds are currently 17th in the standings with two wins, one draw and one defeat from their first four games – teams must finish 22nd or above to qualify for the round of 32.

You can expect to see the likes of Trent Kone-Doherty, Kieran Morrison and Keyrol Figueroa involved, as well as Kaide Gordon and Trey Nyoni if they are not needed for the first team.

9. Referee: Alejandro Hernandez (ESP)

It is an all-Spanish contingent on the pitch at Anfield, with Alejandro Hernandez the referee for this fixture.

He has never refereed Liverpool before but has taken charge of PSV on three occasions – they have won one and lost two of those games, both defeats were away from home.
