Arne Slot: ‘Liverpool slump is ridiculous, I feel guilty about it’

Arne Slot has branded Liverpool’s poor form as “ridiculous” as he, again, sought to make zero excuses for the position his side finds itself in.

Off the back of Liverpool’s eighth defeat from 11 games, there was never going to be an opportunity to escape questions over the team’s form and how Slot views the situation.

And that is how it played ahead of PSV’s visit in the Champions League, and Slot rightly avoided making any excuses, instead honestly describing the current predicament as “ridiculous.”

“I would describe it as ridiculous, almost. Something (a situation) I didn’t expect to be in, not at any club I was ever going to work at, let alone if you manage at Liverpool,” he said.

“So that is unbelievable. I said many times over here, you cannot find, if you even can find an excuse, you will never find enough excuses to perform like this.

“That’s unexpected for the club, for me, and for everyone.

“But I’m also working at a club, if there was ever a club you need to face this, maybe this is the best to face it, because the harder it gets, the more we are together, the more we are trying to achieve the things that Liverpool usually achieves.”

Later, in a translation of an answer to a Dutch reporter about taking responsibility, Slot said: “I take the responsibility and feel guilty for it.”

There is mounting pressure but reports on Monday stated that Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group still have “unwavering support” for Slot despite the malaise.

Arne Slot’s view on goals Liverpool are conceding

Throughout Liverpool’s poor run of results, Slot has lamented his side wasting their opportunities while allowing the opposition to score with their first chance, a cycle the side have yet to break.

And it was the same again from the Dutchman as he used the same “ridiculous” tag to describe the goals conceded and the manner in which they’re conceded.

“I just said something about us conceding far more goals than last season,” Slot started.

“In terms of conceding last season, [at the same time as last season] we’d conceded zero set pieces up to now, now we’ve conceded nine.

“So the amount of goals we conceded and the amount of goals coming from set pieces is, again, close to ridiculous for a club like us.

“But of course, there are probably more details that are different, but the biggest one is the goals we concede.

“From open play, we are still able to generate enough chances for us to get a result. But after half an hour, the first time you have to defend they score a goal.

“That is, of course, not what we did last season, and not to our standards.”

Liverpool have conceded 28 goals across their 18 games to date, whereas this time last season they had leaked only 12.
