The Boston Red Sox acquired right-handed pitcher Sonny Gray in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday. It’s a move that has drawn reactions from both sides of the same argument… Gray has been one of the most consistent pitchers in baseball over the last several seasons, compiling a 3.53 ERA between 2022 and 2025. The Red Sox are taking on some significant money in order to obtain the veteran pitcher, though, and gave up two controlled pitchers for what ultimately amounts to a one-year deal. Underdog’s Justin Havens shared some notable statistics regarding Gray on X, which should help you figure out which side of the argument you’d like to be on: BETTER THAN YOU THINK Gray has seen his earned run average dip in back-to-back-to-back seasons, dropping from 2.79 in 2023 to 3.84 in 2024 to 4.28 in 2025 — though that regression hasn’t been quite as evident when you take defense out of the occasion. DYNAMIC DUO Boston’s rotation now has two of the best sweepers in Major League Baseball. Gray and left-hander Garrett Crochet were two of five pitchers to throw 400 sweepers with a whiff rate of 40% or higher in 2025. Batters have a .130 AVG and a .188 SLG against Sonny Gray’s sweeper since the start of the 2023 season. Both of those marks are the lowest in the Majors in that span against a single pitch type (min. 500 PAs) 𤯠pic.twitter.com/J4bXbT64QF— MLB Stats (@MLBStats) November 25, 2025 BUILT FOR FENWAY PARK Gray allows 40% ground balls against right-handed batters, as opposed to just 13% balls pulled in the air — which should be helpful at Fenway Park. Gray’s hardest hit balls are primarily toward right field, too, according to Red Sox Stats on X. The Red Sox will likely ask him to throw less fastballs this season, and might want to set things up to avoid matchups in The Bronx, but other than that, the underlying metrics point to a solid season on the horizon.
