Cody Gakpo has revealed "honest" talks took place among the Liverpool squad following the "embarrassment" of defeat at home to Nottingham Forest at the weekend. The Reds entertain Gakpo's former club PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Wednesday evening having suffered eight losses in their last 11 games in all competitions.
Liverpool have now slumped into the bottom half of the Premier League table in defence of their title and have been beaten 3-0 in three of their last five outings.
Skipper Virgil van Dijk spoke immediately after the defeat on Saturday of every Reds player needing to assume responsibility, with Gakpo revealing subsequent discussions among the players aimed at arresting the Reds' slide.
"After the game on Saturday it was kind of an embarrassment as we lost 3-0 at home in front of our own fans," said the Holland international.
"We know they are here to help us in every tough situation but we have to give them something back as well, so that was not a good feeling.
"In the days after that, I don't want to say 'angry', but we tried to speak together and really to be honest with each other (about) what we have to do to perform better on the pitch. We also know we have to stick together to put in good performances and get wins.
"Everybody is aware we have to take responsibility on and off the pitch. This was a conversation you have with a team-mate, it wasn't really a 'meeting' meeting, but we are aware we have to take responsibility.
"That's what we spoke about, we are honest because otherwise there's no point in speaking."
Liverpool's 5-1 romp at Eintracht Frankfurt earlier in the Champions League opening stage is the only time this season they have fallen behind in a game and ultimately avoided defeat.
And asked about the lack of resilience from the Reds in recent months, Gakpo admitted: "I don't know where it's gone but we should try to get back to that.
"We know we are in a difficult position. We have to stick together and that's what we try to do on and off pitch, mentally and performance wise.
"It's not been the best of streaks and we have to fight through that. We know we are capable of doing it as we have shown some good performances like that (Real Madrid) but have to keep fighting.
"Most important is we stick together no matter what happens. We demand more from each other as we have to perform better that's what the club and fans deserve.
"We are being honest with each other that some things have to improve to get back to that."
Gakpo added: "It can be difficult (to ignore the outside noise). If you don't want to read anything or get anything into your head it's almost not possible nowadays with social media and online.
"But if we are together in the dressing room we can get confidence from each other. We can get better if we do that."
