Manchester United and Chelsea are reportedly keen on the same Bundesliga star, who is becoming a real talent for Germany’s national side.
Heading into the January transfer window, Man United have a glaring need in the middle of the park, as their lack of dominant midfield options has been exposed on several occasions this season. On Monday night against Everton was a perfect example, as they failed to capitalise on the Toffees having just 10 players on the pitch.
They will more likely be targets for the summer, when United have more money to spend, so Amorim may decide to go after a cheaper alternative instead of Baleba and Anderson, and a fresh name has now emerged from Germany. But they may face competition from Chelsea.
Man United and Chelsea keen on “exceptional” German international
Recent reports in Germany suggest that Man United are looking to the Bundesliga for a potential midfield signing, as a new name has emerged. RB Leipzig midfielder Assan Ouedraogo is becoming more of a star in Germany, but many in England won’t have heard of him.
The 19-year-old recently made his first appearance for the German national side, scoring in his debut, which was a 6-0 win against Slovenia during the last international break. According to Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Chelsea and Man United are both monitoring the Leipzig midfielder for a potential January move.
So far this season, Ouedraogo has really impressed in the Bundesliga, scoring three goals and providing three assists in 11 games. Leipzig boss Ole Werner recently hailed the 19-year-old. He was quoted by Yahoo Sports saying: “Assan is an exceptional talent, very likeable because he never assumes he will automatically score, and he takes responsibility on the pitch.”
Ouedraogo could be a cheap alternative to fellow German star
Stiller is also a German international, but he’s more of a defensive player, which is what Man United need. He has scored one goal, and provided three assists in 11 league games this season, but is expected to command a more expensive fee of at least £44m.
On the contrary, 19-year-old Ouedraogo has an estimated market value of just £10m, and he has already shown this season that he is more of a creative midfielder than Stiller, potentially making him the ideal long-term replacement at Old Trafford for Bruno Fernandes. The Man United captain’s contract expires in June 2027.
