Liverpool may have a managerial decision to make regarding Arne Slot if results in the Premier League don’t improve
Liverpool turned to Arne Slot last year as their replacement for Jurgen Klopp. He had big shoes to fill at Anfield after catching the eye in the Eredivisie at Feyenoord. The Dutchman adapted well to life in England though and won the Premier League title at the first time of asking.
This season was all about retaining their crowd ahead of the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea. However, things have not gone to plan for the Merseyside giants at all. They have struggled for form and find themselves sat down in 12th place in the table after their first 12 fixtures.
Liverpool boss Arne Slot feeling the heat at Anfield
Liverpool boss Slot will be feeling the heat and could be under serious pressure if results don’t improve. He has credit in the bank from his team’s performance in the last campaign. However, he was heavily backed by signings like Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz, among others, in the summer, and a decision will need to be made by the hierarchy if he can’t get the best out of his group.
One name that the Reds should consider if they sack Slot is Crystal Palace head coach Oliver Glasner. The 51-year-old has done an impressive job since his switch to Selhurst Park back in February 2024. He guided the Eagles to the FA Cup earlier this year after they beat Manchester City against the odds in the final at Wembley.
Glasner, who has also managed the likes of SV Ried, LASK Linz and Wolfsburg in the past, also won the Europa League with Eintracht Frankfurt in 2022. They beat Rangers in the final on penalties in Sevilla. His current club have flourished under his guidance and they are positioned in 5th right now.
Why Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner would be ideal for Liverpool
Crystal Palace will face a battle to keep hold of Glasner in the future. He has been described as an ‘elite’ manager by his chairman Steve Parish. It seems inevitable that bigger teams will come in for his services. He would be a good fit for Liverpool and has proved with the Eagles that he can perform at the top level in England.
Glasner managed to get the best out of Eberechi Eze before he was sold to Arsenal in the last transfer window. The attacking midfielder scored the winner in the FA Cup final against City and has since become a key player for the Gunners.
Wirtz needs someone to put their arm around his shoulder and give him the freedom to do something similar. The number 10 has struggled at Anfield but Glasner has already displayed his ability to get the best out of a player in that position in the form of Eze.
In addition, Daniel Munoz has excelled under Glasner’s guidance. Like Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong, he is a full-back that likes to get up and down the flank of defence and get involved in attacks. Kerkez and Frimpong haven’t been able to hit the ground running since their transfers from AFC Bournemouth and Bayer Leverkusen respectively but they would do well under the Austrian’s system.
It would allow them to get forward more often and also ease the defensive burden - something Kerkez in particular has struggled with. Of course, Slot will be given plenty more time to turn things around at Anfield but any potential replacements will need to have shown the ability to work well with the profile of the current squad - and Glasner has shown his ability to help players in certain positions excel.
Liverpool are back in action on Wednesday night as they look to bounce back from their loss to Nottingham Forest. They play PSV at home in the Champions League. The Reds then play West Ham away on Sunday in the league.
