The New York Giants are preparing to face Drake Maye and the New England Patriots next Monday, and both teams are riding lengthy streaks. The Giants have lost six games in a row while the Patriots have reeled off nine straight wins.
Maye has had some hiccups recently, but overall, he has had a fantastic campaign is definitely in the MVP conversation with New England being 10-2 on the campaign.
New York edge rusher Brian Burns opened up about Maye in the lead up to the clash, and while he said he is impressed by the second-year quarterback, he sees some flaws in his game that can be exposed.
"He's talented. Talented arm. I'm not really too sure yet about how quick he is to process everything, but I do feel like he makes the right plays at the right time,” Burns told reporters. “He does seem to be poised, maybe a little bit too poised, in the pocket, but just overall, he's been showing his talent, for sure.”
What does “too poised” mean?
"I feel like, at times, he's so caught up in making the right play or getting so caught up in his routes downfield, he just forgets about somewhat of who's rushing him, if that makes sense,” Burns explained.
Maye has been sacked 37 times this season, so perhaps the Giants star has a little bit of a valid point.
“What I mean by poised is that he takes his time, he makes the right reads and he tries to make the right play,” Burns added. “It can also bite you in the butt at a certain amount of times if you've got edge rushers coming and you're not really too cognitive of where they are."
Maye leads the NFL in both passing yards (3,130) and completion percentage (71 percent) while also throwing 21 touchdowns and six interceptions while posting a 110.7 passer rating.
Meanwhile, Burns has racked up 54 tackles, 13 sacks, a couple of forced fumbles, seven passes defended and 21 quarterback hits.
The Patriots have some injuries along their offensive line now, too, which could make Maye’s job even more difficult against a talented Giants pass rush next week.
