The [Patriots](https://www.masslive.com/patriots/) have added some additional tackle depth following Will Campbell’s knee injury.
On Tuesday, New England signed veteran tackle Thayer Munford Jr. to the active roster off Cleveland’s practice squad. Munford was in training camp with the Patriots this summer but was released during final cuts.
Munford then signed onto New England’s practice squad, but was poached by Cleveland for their active roster in September. Released by the Browns in October and re-signed to Cleveland’s practice squad, the Patriots have now done the same thing, taking him back to Foxborough on the 53-man roster.
The 26-year-old spent the first three seasons of his career in Las Vegas (2022-24), appearing in 46 games and starting 18. A seventh-round pick out of Ohio State, Munford stands 6-foot-6, and weighs in at 331 pounds.
With Campbell expected to be sidelined for “a couple weeks” per Mike Vrabel [with a reported MCL sprain,](https://www.masslive.com/patriots/2025/11/will-campbell-injury-nfl-insider-provides-update-on-patriots-rookie-report.html) the only other tackles on the active roster were Morgan Moses, Vederian Lowe, and rookie Marcus Bryant.
“(Campbell) won’t be out there this week,” Vrabel said on Monday. “It’s going to be a couple weeks. We’ll have to make a decision here on the roster to see how long that will be and go from there. But it’s nothing that’s going to, hopefully, put him out for the entire season.”
Adding Munford wasn’t the only move New England made on Tuesday.
The Patriots also placed backup cornerback Alex Austin on injured reserve with an undisclosed ailment and made a couple of their own practice squad moves. New England released running back Jonathan Ward while bringing lineman Bill Murray back into the fold as a practice squad member.
Murray spent three seasons in New England (2020-22) and Bill Belichick cross-trained him from the defensive line to offense. He appeared in one game, listed as a guard, and then dressed for three games with the Bears last season. Chicago released him in September.
