NBA Champion Rick Fox Will Try a New Career Path

Rick Fox enjoyed a successful NBA career, winning three championships and appearing for some of the greatest franchises in all of sports. Fox began his career as a first-round pick of the Boston Celtics in 1991, and spent his first six seasons with the team.

The former North Carolina Tar Heel joined the Los Angeles Lakers in free agency ahead of the 1997 season, and he would go on to be a vital piece of their "three-peat" of championships from 2000 through 2002.

During and after his NBA career, Fox remained busy as an actor. He appeared in television shows like HBO's Oz, as well as films like "Blue Chips" and "Eddie." Fox also started the prominent esports organization Echo Fox, which competed across several gaming disciplines for multiple years.

What's Next for Rick Fox?

With other ventures behind him, Fox will now attempt a new profession: politics. The former NBA star will look to earn a seat within the legislature of the Bahamas next year.

"You've shared that you want more transparency, a modern economy that prioritizes affordability and security, and a country where opportunity is our reality, not just a promise," Fox said in his announcement.

The former basketball player was born to a Canadian mother and a Bahamian father in Toronto, and he grew up in the Bahamas.

"I'm stepping forward today because we cannot wait any longer to realize a Bahamas that we all envision is possible," Fox added.

He stated that the Bahamas needs to "empower our youth with real opportunities, build a nation that runs efficiently, innovates boldly, and leads globally, deliver world-class healthcare, affordable housing, and safe communities and compete on the world stage."

Fox's Inspiration to Run For Office

Fox's candidacy comes as the Bahamas deals with adversity from numerous sources. Corruption scandals, illegal immigration, and continued recovery efforts from damage done by 2019's Hurricane Dorian.

"This is bigger than party politics. This is the Bahamas versus the world," Fox said in his announcement on social media. He also shared a family photo from his childhood, tying his roots to the archipelago.

"Imagine a nation where every Bahamian feels secure, safe, empowered, and proud. Where opportunity flows, innovation thrives, and our people shape the world from home."

Fox's announcement was met with excitement from fans and potential constituents, many of whom said that they agreed with his vision for the future. The ex-NBA player will run in an election that will be decided before next October, and he will run to represent one of 39 potential constituencies in the Bahamas' parliamentary system.
