Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has responded to reports suggesting the club could sack him.
Reports from Spain have suggested that Alonso is in a risky situation, with some players reportedly unhappy with his methods.
A three-game winless streak, combined with Vinícius Jr.’s refusal to sign a new contract due to tensions with the manager, has only intensified scrutiny.
Despite sitting atop LaLiga, one point ahead of Barcelona, Real Madrid recorded their third consecutive draw as they played out a 2-2 stalemate against Elche on Sunday.
Los Blancos have struggled for consistency both home and away amid reports of player dissatisfaction with Alonso’s training approach and tactical decisions.
Alonso is known for a more hands-on approach compared to former successful Madrid managers like Carlo Ancelotti and Zinedine Zidane.
He has implemented strict rules to eliminate ‘bad habits’ and insists that players must fight for their place in the starting XI in every training session.
Real Madrid will have an opportunity to bounce back on Wednesday when they travel to face Olympiacos in the Champions League, aiming to secure their place in the automatic qualification spots.
Speaking ahead of the clash, Alonso downplayed the rumours, insisting he is focused solely on the team’s performance.
“I don’t think about that. I focus on what happens in training and on the pitch, that’s all that matters. Everything else, I don’t care about,” Alonso said.
“My message is reaching the players. I think the players understand the instructions very well.
“Vini saying ‘it feels like we don’t want to win’ and Mbappé saying ‘we need to press higher up’?
“That’s normal behaviour on the pitch, these things happen.”
“It’s just as important as the footballing philosophy, the tactical and physical work, managing personalities… and it’s a process with different phases that you have to know how to navigate,” he added.
“At Real Madrid, it’s fundamental.”
“I didn’t realise it had been six months, but it’s turning out to be exactly what I expected.
“A very demanding job with good moments and moments where you need that concentration and connection.
“We’re in one where we have to show a reaction. I’m enjoying the whole package, everything it entails.
“I said it on the first day and I’ll say it again.”
