New England Patriots Poach Familiar Face With 18-Career Starts

The New England Patriots’ offensive line suffered a major hit in Week 12 against the Cincinnati Bengals. Morgan Moses briefly left the game with an illness but returned, while Will Campbell was carted off due to an MCL sprain and did not return. Campbell is expected to miss a couple of weeks, and the Patriots may place him on injured reserve, which would sideline him through Week 17. The team currently has three healthy offensive tackles on the 53-man roster, which is far from ideal.

According to Ben Belford-Peltzman of PFSN, the Patriots have signed Thayer Munford Jr. from the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad. NFL rules require players poached from a team’s practice squad to receive at least three weekly paychecks, and they count against the 53-man roster for three weeks, even if they get released before then. Munford has primarily played at right tackle, logging 688 snaps, and also has experience at left tackle and the sixth offensive lineman, with 245 and 155 snaps, respectively, according to PFF.

The Las Vegas Raiders released Thayer Munford Jr. during roster cuts after competing for the starting left guard and right tackle positions, along with the swing tackle role. He signed with the New England Patriots’ practice squad in late August, but the Cleveland Browns signed him to the active roster in late September. Munford hasn’t appeared in a game this season, as the Browns cut him in mid-October but signed him to their practice squad shortly after.
