Man City player ratings vs Bayer Leverkusen: Five 4/10s as Guardiola left red-faced

Manchester City's impressive 23-match unbeaten streak at the Etihad in Champions League group games came to a crashing halt with a 2-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen. City, who could have virtually secured at least a play-off spot with a win, were noticeably outplayed and Pep Guardiola's significant team changes proved unsuccessful after he made 10 changes to the starting eleven.

The attack was particularly weak, while the defence allowed Alejandro Grimaldo to score the opening goal. Despite making three changes at half-time, Leverkusen managed to double their lead through Patrik Schick. Even the introduction of Rayan Cherki and Erling Haaland couldn't get City on the scoreboard. Man City player ratings vs Leverkusen

James Trafford - 5

Although neither goal seemed directly his fault, his performance was far from convincing.

Abdukodir Khusanov - 5

Showed some nice control but was responsible for the goal and was an obvious choice to be substituted as City chased the game.

John Stones - 6

Easily the best of the defenders, though he wasn't able to push forward and influence the game.

Nathan Ake - 4

Appeared rusty and was at fault for the goals City conceded, failing to keep up with the pace of the game.

Rayan Ait-Nouri - 4

Caught out of position for Leverkusen's first goal, and there were too many heavy touches and misplaced passes.

Nico Gonzalez - 6

The only player to retain his spot from the Newcastle match, likely to keep it for Leeds as he didn't put a foot wrong.

Oscar Bobb - 4

Started strong against Leverkusen in the first three minutes but then disappeared and failed to return after half-time.

Rico Lewis - 5

Struggled to control the game, with poor decision-making in the final third and no support for Gonzalez.

Tijjani Reijnders - 5

Came close with another shot that perhaps should have found the net, otherwise didn't provide enough assistance to Gonzalez.

Savinho - 4

Lasted the full 90 minutes, though it's hard to pinpoint any significant contributions.

Omar Marmoush - 4

Showed more passion trying to rally the crowd than he did leading the attack, offering very little.

Substitutes

Nico O'Reilly (for Ait-Nouri, 46) - 6

More stable and energetic.

Phil Foden (for Lewis, 46) - 6

Delivered a nice pass through for Haaland.

Doku (for Savinho, 46) - 6

Seemed the most likely to create something.

Rayan Cherki (for Khusanov, 65) - 6

Forced a good save with a free-kick.

Erling Haaland (for Marmoush, 65) - 5

Missed a good opportunity when through on goal.
