“I Need Somewhere New” Longtime NFL Head Coach Pursuing ‘Change of Scenery’ In 2026

With over a month remaining in the 2025 NFL regular season, speculation is already building around potential head coaching changes for 2026. Two teams have already parted ways with their coaches: the Tennessee Titans fired Brian Callahan after a 1-5 start, during which the offense scored just 83 points across six games, and the New York Giants dismissed Brian Daboll, the 2022 Coach of the Year, who finished his tenure with a 20-40-1 record.

ESPN’s Josina Anderson reported on X that league sources anticipate five additional NFL teams could have head coaching openings, with data collection ongoing for a potential sixth. This would expand the current two vacancies significantly as the season progresses.

Unnamed Longtime Coach Seeks New Opportunity

Anderson also noted that a longtime NFL head coach is contemplating a change of scenery and has confided these thoughts to others. If the coach decides to leave, it would further swell the list of available positions. The coach’s identity was not disclosed in the report.

Speculation Centers on Veteran Coaches

Industry observers have pointed to coaches with extended tenures as possible candidates. Mike Tomlin has led the Pittsburgh Steelers since 2007, marking 18 seasons with the team. John Harbaugh has helmed the Baltimore Ravens since 2008, overseeing 17 seasons. Both have maintained consistent success but could be weighing fresh starts.

Verifiable Quotes

“Keeping tabs as we approach Carousel season: League sources are eyeing five more NFL teams with projected openings at head coach, as of where things stand today, while waiting to collect more data on a 6th team too. Meanwhile, there’s a longtime NFL head coach out there who is considering wanting a change of scenery & has told others of these thoughts. If he acts on those lingering feelings, his departure would clearly add to the list of vacancies.” – Josina Anderson (X post, November 2025).
