Lakers legend launches bid for political office

Former NBA forward [Rick Fox](https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/f/foxri01.html#all_transactions), who won three NBA titles during his 13-season career, announced Tuesday on [Facebook](https://www.facebook.com/rickafox) that he is running for a legislative position in the Bahamas in the country’s 2026 general election.

Fox was born in Toronto but has deep ties to the Bahamas through his father and spent part of his childhood in Nassau, the capital, before moving to the United States to play high school basketball in Indiana.

“For months, I’ve been listening closely to the hopes and frustrations of my fellow Bahamians,” Fox said in his announcement. “One truth is clear: the future of the Bahamas will depend on the choices we make right now.”

Fox said he wanted to bring more transparency, a modern economy that prioritizes affordability and security, and a country where opportunity is reality, not just a promise, to the island country.

“As a candidate and as a leader for the Bahamas, I will demand transparency, honesty and integrity while demanding a level of excellence from all of us,” Fox said.

Fox was selected by the Boston Celtics in the first round of the 1991 NBA draft and spent six years with the team before being released in 1997. He then signed with the Los Angeles Lakers, winning three consecutive NBA titles from the 1999-2000 season through 2001-02. Fox was traded back to the Celtics in 2004 but never played for them, electing to retire.
