Liverpool inserted a buyback clause into the deal to sell Jarell Quansah over the summer.
The Reds sold the central defender to Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth £30million plus £5million in add-ons in July 2025 in order to offer the centre-back more regular first team football, while also boosting their budget for a summer splurge on stars including Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak.
Having already impressed for his new club in the Bundesliga, Quansah garnered increased attention for his role in Bayer Leverkusen's 2-0 victory over Manchester City in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
It represents a remarkable rise for a player who is now surely regarded as one of Europe's top young defensive talents and one who got away from Arne Slot's side.

Liverpool's decision to sell Quansah wasn't a rash one. The Reds knew just how talented the defender was and how high his stock could rise with a successful couple of seasons away from Anfield.
Selling the player for a fee worth £35million, Slot's side also inserted a buy-back clause into the deal which gives Liverpool a first option on a deal to re-sign the 23-year-old. That deal comes into effect in the summer of 2027 and would be worth £51million which means that the Premier League champions have a pre-agreed deal in place for a player who could be at the top of his game at the age of 25. While a buy-back is in place, there are no reports of any sell-on clause being inserted into the deal.
Since joining Bayer Leverkusen, Quansah has made 14 appearances for the club with 13 of those coming in the starting line-up.
Liverpool Need A New Centre-Back

While Quansah's buy-back clause doesn't come into effect until the summer of 2027, Liverpool's need fo a central defender is heating up.
Poor form from Ibrahima Konate amid interest from Real Madrid and a downturn in performances from Virgil van Dijk has heightened the need for Slot to strengthen his defence in January.
Marc Guehi is the club's number one target as he moves towards the final six months of his Crystal Palace contract, but with interest building it remains to be seen if the Reds will be able to get a deal done.
Waiting 18 months to trigger the buy-back clause on Quansah seems to be the game plan at Anfield. However, if they are looking for reinforcements before then, then the Reds may be forced to pay over the odds to bring the player back early. Given the caliber of his performances and the fact that he's still just 23 years of age, it's safe to say that Quansah's stock has never been higher.
