The Carolina Panthers found themselves in hot water Tuesday morning after a postgame scuffle that nobody saw coming. The NFL wasted no time launching a review into what went down between Panthers safety Trevon Moehrig and 49ers receiver Jauan Jennings after the final whistle blew.
By Tuesday afternoon, the league had already made its call. Moehrig would be sitting out Week 13 against the Rams following what initially looked like an unprovoked attack from Jennings. Two clean shots to the face will do that.

However, the full story didn’t emerge until later footage surfaced from the game itself. In the dying moments of the fourth quarter, Moehrig appeared to deliver a low blow to Jennings that cameras barely caught.
Jennings didn’t hold back when asked about it afterward, making it clear that cheap shot was exactly why he went after Moehrig once the clock hit zero.

Reports from NFL Insider Tom Pelissero confirmed that Trevon Moehrig will serve a one-game suspension for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Meanwhile, the 49ers caught a break. Jennings is expected to face only a fine for throwing those punches, with no suspension coming his way.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Moehrig plans to appeal the decision, hoping to get the suspension knocked down to just a fine instead. That would be huge for Carolina considering Moehrig ranks as their second-leading tackler this season and has been lockdown in coverage.

Losing him against a Rams offense that ranks top-five in passing could be brutal. The Panthers need this game to keep pace with the Buccaneers in the NFC South race, and being without their starting safety makes that climb a whole lot steeper.
